The Seminar Scholars Program

The UTS Seminar Scholars Initiative (SSI) is a program that provides supplemental professional development funding to GT 1000 and GT 2000 instructors and Team Leaders. Its goal is to encourage instructional team members’ further learning in and contributions to the fields of first-year or transfer student studies, or other student success-related areas relevant to teaching in the UTS program. This pedagogical development opportunity will contribute to building the success of not only the individual scholar, but also that of their future students and/or colleagues in UTS. While funds are limited, we hope to be able to support 3-5 scholars a year through this initiative.

Process

Candidates for the Seminar Scholars Initiative may apply for up to $1000/year in professional development funding towards conference attendance, workshops, webinars, or other relevant growth opportunities. This program is open to both instructors and Team Leaders participating in the Undergraduate Transition Seminars program for at least two semesters (do not need to be consecutive). To allow for more equitable distribution of support, candidates cannot receive SSI funding in consecutive academic years.

Candidates should complete the application by the stated deadline (December 15, 2024) with the details of their plans, as well as a detailed budget, as applicable. Please apply here: https://gatech.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4THJNffTK0gHv9A In the event the allotted funding for SSI is not completely used in the initial application round, a second round may be solicited in January.

All Seminar Scholars will be required to share the knowledge and outcomes of their professional development experience with the Undergraduate Transition Seminars learning community, whether through a poster at the Fall Awards Banquet or Spring Celebration events, lunch and learn session, workshop, instructor conference or Team Leader training presentation, or other outlet to be agreed upon.

Evaluation

Seminar Scholar applications will be reviewed carefully by the three members of the UTS Leadership team (Associate Director, Transfer Student Success Manager, and Program and Operations Manager) using a qualitative rubric.

Applications will be reviewed using the following criteria:

  • Relevance to individual’s professional development
  • Relevance to the mission/purpose, assignments, pedagogy, or outcomes of GT 1000 and/or GT 2000 (first-year, transfer, and other transitional studies topics)
  • Applicability to individual’s respective role in UTS program
  • Clarity of budget
